Nick’s charge nurse in the hospital that day was just as surely God’s divine provision for him as was the angel of God who led Hagar to the life-sustaining well for Ishmael. God sees, hears, and responds to the prayers of His people with heavenly care.

Chapter Twenty-eight

Friendly Reunion

If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.

Romans 12:18

Have you ever had a friend who let you down or hurt you? Are you always the loyal, reliable friend you should be to others? A close friend and I parted ways several years ago, and neither of us was without fault. With many long-standing issues, the relationship seemed broken beyond repair. I was sad and hurt—as was she. We both moved on with our lives, but we also continued to grieve the loss of our friendship. As time passed, we each made a few attempts to reconcile, but our efforts seemed futile. I finally surmised that the relationship simply wasn’t meant to be.

I tried to put the friendship out of my mind and move on, but I couldn’t. I loved my former friend deeply, and as much as I tried to convince myself (and others) that it didn’t matter, it did. After three years of distance, I prayed and mustered up the courage to reach out to my long-lost friend through e-mail. I wrote:

I’m sorry. I love you. I miss knowing you. I desire to be real with you again. I don’t want hurt feelings on either side, and I know there are. Will you forgive me for the things I’ve done to cause you pain?
